How RYANs work

RYANs meet at least six times a year, and sometimes more depending on the decision of the local group. Members can choose to spend time outside meetings undertaking consultation or research work that arises from meetings. The work of the RYANs is supported by Local Team staff members for the Department of Planning and Community Development.

Members elect a convenor for each RYAN. The convenor is the primary point of contact for both the government and network members. The Director of the Office for Youth hosts quarterly meetings with the convenors to facilitate policy discussion and information sharing.

The networks help the government make informed decisions about policy issues that impact young Victorians. Sometimes this means commenting on documents prepared by government; and other times it may involve providing input at initial stages of policy development.

Through their work, RYANs establish and implement strategies that allow young people to participate in their discussions and activities. Young people’s involvement is a key component of each network’s task.
